Commission Asks County to Close Ocean Drive to Cars Every Winter, Thanksgiving Through March

A 7-0 vote on Sept. 10 urges Miami-Dade County to approve an annual pedestrian-only season on Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th streets, extended on the dais to run through March 31. Hotel, restaurant and shop owners who packed the chamber called the closures a threat to guest access and sales, and the city's transportation chief said the permit would follow the same county process as this summer's World Cup closure.

Miami Beach Commission Votes to Kill Two Bike Path Projects, Forfeiting Millions in State Grants Over Neighborhood Pushback

In a vote that drew sharp criticism from cycling advocates and raised serious questions about Miami Beach's commitment to its own Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan, the City Commission approved a resolution to discontinue two long-planned multi-use path projects — forfeiting over $1.2 million in Florida Department of Transportation grants and walking away from years of planning work, largely in response to opposition from residents living adjacent to the Miami Beach Golf Course.
