The Miami Beach City Commission will vote on approving artist Christina Petterson to create a $15,000 mural honoring environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas at her namesake park in South Beach. The concrete vinyl mural would measure approximately 16 feet wide by 6 feet tall and depict Douglas "relaxing in the habitat she spent her life protecting" on the west-facing wall of the park's restroom facility.

The project originated from a March 2024 motion by the Miami Beach Commission for Women to honor Douglas's contributions to South Florida. Both the Art in Public Places Committee in May 2025 and the Historic Preservation Board in October 2025 have unanimously approved Petterson's proposal. Petterson, a Stockholm-born, Miami-raised artist, is a Fulbright Scholar whose work focuses on Florida's endangered ecosystems and is held in collections including the Perez Art Museum Miami.

Commissioners Tanya K. Bhatt, Laura Dominguez and Alex Fernandez are sponsoring the resolution, with funding allocated from the Art in Public Places Fund in the FY 2026 budget. City Manager Eric Carpenter recommends approval of the project, which would add a unique commissioned artwork to the popular South Beach park that serves both locals and tourists.
