City Commission to Consider Denouncing State Rep Basabe
The Miami Beach City Commission will consider a resolution denouncing what officials call "false, misleading, and unsubstantiated public statements" made by State Representative Fabián Basabe against the city and its commissioners. The resolution, sponsored by Mayor Steven Meiner and Commissioners Tanya K. Bhatt, Laura Dominguez and Alex Fernandez, is scheduled for discussion at the Dec. 17 commission meeting.
According to the resolution, Basabe has made public claims through press, social media and official correspondence for several years accusing the city of corruption, mismanagement, favoritism and unethical conduct. The document specifically references Basabe's October 14 request for a "sweeping audit" of Miami Beach, alleging financial mismanagement and cronyism. The resolution also cites his criticism of the city's homeless outreach efforts and claims about misuse of voter-approved General Obligation Bond funds.
The proposed resolution states that unsubstantiated allegations by public officials "undermine public trust, harm the City's reputation, disparage City employees and elected officials, and create unnecessary doubt in the integrity of municipal governance." If approved, the resolution would formally denounce Basabe's statements while reaffirming the city's commitment to transparency and ethical governance.
